Background
Sony’s loyalty experience, known as Sony Rewards, is a way for Sony customers to earn points for product purchases and other activities and then use those points to get Sony products and experiences. I worked with three other designers tasked with reimagining the customer’s experience engaging with the program on the web as well as on a mobile app.
Scope
While we tackled lots of aspects of the app, I want to focus on one here: DVD registration. We designed the registration for the mobile app as well as how the users would get to the app from the website. Both are shown here.
Constraints
We were limited in the real time image recognition software that we used to allow users to easily scan their DVD box's unique code to register the product.

We were also limited in designing for the library of eligible DVDs. The app development would not support a 'search' of the DVDs so we had to find a way to display the list of eligible DVDs appropriately.
UX Challenge
How might we help users register their eligible DVDs so that they can easily accumulate points?
1. User stories for this experience
-
As a Sony Rewards member, I need to know about the program so that I can participate
-
As a Sony Rewards member, I need to know that not all DVDs are eligible for registration so that I don't assume that I can register something and then get disappointed.
-
As a Sony Rewards member, I need to access to the list of eligible DVD titles so I can register the eligible ones.
-
As a Sony Rewards member, I need to know how the registration process works so that I can follow the right steps to get my points.
-
As a Sony Rewards member, I need the eligible DVD in hand in order to register it
2. Document flows: Guiding the user from the website to the mobile app
DVD registration can only happen in the app, so we needed to account for barriers that keep users from getting the app. The most logical place to start was with users who may be exploring the website. We needed to get them to their app store and into the app as seamlessly as possible.
I documented the process of driving users to download the app from the Sony Rewards Website on both desktop and mobile, clarifying where and how users change devices.

Once users, get to the app, I needed to understand the process of how users will complete key flows such as product registration (in this case DVD disc registration) in the Sony Rewards App. The orange line indicates the path when users use the barcode scanning feature over entering their disc number manually.
3. Wireframe the app download flow

4. Wireframe the website disc registration web page

Not all products are eligible for product registration and product registration is not validated in real time, meaning that a user could go through the entire process of product registration without realizing that the product that he registered in not even eligible.

Users who come to the website get an overview of the registration process, are encouraged to download the app, and garner interest by helping users see that they have products to register with Sony Rewards | Built in Adobe XD

5. Wireframe the disc registration process in the Sony Rewards app
Not all products are eligible for product registration and product registration is not validated in real time, meaning that a user could go through the entire process of product registration without realizing that the product that he registered in not even eligible. So, we provided a list of eligible discs before and during the user starts registration.

6. Prototype the flow
I used Adobe XD to build a prototype to test the flow
The prototype helped us test the flow ourselves and was used to test it with users. In the future, I would prefer to have users select their DVD from the list rather than just seeing if the DVD is on the list, but due to limitations in development, this was the best solution.
